Random mouse movements and internet

From time to time my mouse pointer (and at random) starts jumping around by itself opening and closing applications, shortcuts and the start menu. This happens exclusively when I am online - all extras associated with the phone line I use are switched off.

Suggestions welcome.

Is this a pci card modem, or an external modem connected to a serial or usb port ?

Possibly a driver or interrupt conflict between the mouse or ioport driver and your modem.

Run sigverif to check for any unsigned drivers in the system and replace with signed ones which are qualified against xp.

What kind of mouse is it. usb or serial or standard mouse port? Could you try a different mouse type and see if it still happens.

I've had loads of problems with pci modems over the years both with the drivers, and with the hardware interupts. You can sometimes resolve the problem by putting the modem card in a different pci slot, so it gets a different interupt.
