Random lock ups

My Computer locks up at random times, usually after starting an application,
and must be rebooted.
I've traced the problem to a single bit on my memory stick. since it's a 1GB
stick, I'd hate to throw it out because of one bad bit.
So my question is; is there any way to tell windows not to use that
particular byte, like loading in a dummy program there so widows already
thinks it is in use?
Any suggestions would be helpful.

That sucks.

So get it replaced. You got a waranty with it, right?
If not - throw it out. Memory is cheap and not worth too much pain.

No - not that i know of. If you have bad hardware - best to get it
repaired/replaced. Think of it like having a bad section of hose in your
braking system.. It doesn't always leak and the duct tape you wrapped closed
it up "okay" - but do you trust that to stop you always?

Use the "Crucial Memory Advisor Tool" to find out what RAM you need..

And then compare prices and deals and get twice as much. heh
