random files not visable to Macintosh users

Hi,

We have a server that running Windows 2000 server with SP4 and about 20
Macintosh machines that are all runnning MacOS9. Occasionally we discover
that a Macintosh cannot see a file on a Macintosh share located on the
server. The file is visible if you look on the server console or from a PC
but no Macintosh (even if logged in as Administrator) can see the file.

to work-around the situation we have to get on the server console and copy
the file, delete the original and rename the copied file the same as the
just-deleted original.

Interestingly prior to the work-around being implemented if you load
Sherlock (Mac's search tool) and search for the invisible file it can be be
found on Sherlock.

All the Mac's are using the terminal release of MacOS9. Prior to Windows
2000, we had a Novell Netware 4 server and never had this problem.

Hope you can help.

I had a similar thing happen here once. It was caused by the Symantec AV
Corp Ed version 9. This version has "email" features in the the Client-Side
AV App that earlier versions did not. For some reason they interferred with
the Mac shares if it was loaded on the file server. The solution was to
uninstall it and then reinstall it as a "custom" install from the CD (as
opposed to pushing it out from the AV Server). The during the install
selecting to not install those email features.

It worked fine after that. Those two things are not even supposed to be
related to each other, but that is what happend and I got that from the
Symantec Support when I called them.

Thanks for your reply. I too had heard of this problem. We used to have
Symantec AV Corp Ed version 9 on this server but I took it off and replaced
it with Sophos AV and the problem continues.

I was pretty thorough in cleaning Symantec Corp off the system so I don't
think this can the solution unless it has *damaged* the system in some way.

Hi Marc,

Based my research, I would like to suggest you restart the Windows 2000
Server for Macintosh service. Once we restarted the service, please attemp
to test it again

I hope the information helps. If there is anything that is unclear, please
feel free to let me know.

Thanks & Regards,

Just to be clear you want me to restart the "File Server for Macintosh"
service?

If so I have scheduled in this the next time we get this problem - which
might be in a few days.
