since installing service pack 2 both mine, my dads and my mums computers are
all booting up randomly when they feel like it. The only way so far i have
been able to put a stop to this is by removing the power lead. Please could
someone tell me (in not too difficult terms) how i am able to stop this as it
can drive you mad in the mddle of the night when it decides too boot up.
Once booted it stays on till i shut it down.
oh and 2 computerrs are in one house and mine is in another. Also all ahve
their network cables unplugged as the wake on LAN was making it worse.
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Hi,

If they are booting up from a cold (power off) state, then the problem has
to be a BIOS setting. This has nothing to do with Windows. In addition to
the "wake on lan" setting, there are other "wake on..." features like "ring"
that may need to be disabled. Also check for options that allow the system
to power up from mouse or keyboard motion.

If they are booting from a warm state (in hibernation or low power standby),
then check the task scheduler and settings in various programs. Some may be
set to automatically update themselves at night, antivirus programs often
wake the system to do scheduled scans.

I'm having this same issue on a computer. The computer was a new build at
the beginning of the year and was installed with sp2, so I don't know if that
is the problem. I do know, that my LAN Power On setting is disabled, as well
as every other "Power On" setting, yet the computer still boots itself. I
also know that disconnecting the LAN cable from the cable modem solves the
problem, although it will be temporary. Also, the problem only happens on a
Windows Power Down, not a "Hard Shut Down" by holding down the power button
for 5 sec. This tells me that it is an issue with the Power Management
Settings. The motherboard it's running is an inexpensive PC Chips M916
(v1.3a). What motherboards, or PC manufacturers, do you have? I'm going to
try updating the BIOS, although I'm unsure if this will solve the problem.
