random black screens and system freezes

win xp pro sp2
ms office pro 2003

Since recently running ms update, I have experienced random system freezes,
lasting several seconds, with complete blacking out of the screen. There is
no specific action that will provoke the problem.

I have used system restore to go to the configuration before the update, but
the behavior persists. I have run trend micro pc cillin and adaware (with
updated definitions), but other than a few tracking cookies, nothing was
found. MS AntiSpyware is running.

Can anybody please help me correct this problem?

Thanks,

Clem.

I (think I) fixed the problem by updating the NVidia video driver. I note
that it was not windows logo tested, and it was not recommended as a
hardware driver updated by windows update...

Colin,

I am not familiar with the event logs, but see the response above.

Mr. Lol,

I tried Panda, it only found 3 spyware entries, but see the response above.
