=rand() - only if input before the first manual page break in docs?

I've used the =rand() command for YEARS in training classes - I just discovered that it only seems to work if placed PRIOR to the first manual page break in a document, at least that's the behavior I see in 97/NT and 2003/XP. Section breaks don't effect the behavior, but try it anywhere in a document AFTER the first manual page break, and it does absolutely NOTHING! Surprise

Can anyone confirm this?

Hi, hbh,

That's not quite right. The condition for =rand() to work is that the
equal sign is the first character in its paragraph and the closing
parenthesis is the last character before you hit Enter. If you put in
a manual page break and immediately type =rand(), then the *page
break* is the first character in that paragraph, which prevents the
expansion.

If you type the manual page break, a paragraph mark, and then the
=rand(), it works. Then you can go back and remove the extra paragraph
mark.
