I have 1Gb. of ram installed, but lately my computer tells me that the ram is
only 512Mg. Also on startup the beeps are not the same as before. I suspect
there's a fault with the ram but could it also be the motherboard?

If it is registering 512MB instead of 1GB i'd have the RAM checked first.
Is this a single memory stick of 1GB or two 512MB sticks? If it is two 512MB
sticks remove the newer of the two and see if the beeps are still heard. If
they aren't then the RAM is at fault.
I take it the motherboard was working okay before the new RAM was installed?

It's two sticks of 512Mb., and they both work when inserted individually.
This is not new ram. It all happened suddenly a few days ago.

It could still be a Ram problem. I would suggest that you test the ram
individually. Go to http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp and download the
free Windows Memory diagnostic tool. Also download the user guide and follow
the instruction to check to see if the ram has developed a fault.
As i said test the ram individually rather than the two sticks together;
that way you can check to see which ram stick is faulty. If both sticks turn
out ok then there may be a motherboard problem, but again this depends upon
the beep alerts you are recieving. You might check you pc's user manual to
see if it gives any 'beep' error information. If not try a google search for
bios beep error (alternatively check the bios manufacturer's website. If
your pc is a branded name you might need to check the pc manufacturer's
website for the necessary beep codes.

you could also try to count the beeps and search on the internet what
it is, beeps on the startup tell you if there is a problem or not, could
be a broken ram stick.

There are three(3) beeps and according to the bios manufacturer's it's faulty
ram.
I borrowed two new ram sticks from a local shop but the beeps are still there.

Have you tested the Ram using the software from the link i posted in my
previous mail?

I have and I thank you for the tip. It tells me that the ram is o.k. My last
resort is to take the machine to the shop and have my motherboard tested.
Thanks again for your help. It's been greatly appreciated. The same goes for
all that tried to help.
