Vista and RAM

Before I start, I've read this thread among others but have not found the
solution to my problem

I am running Vista Home Premium 32-bit on a AMD 64x2 4400 processor and an
A8N-SLI motherboard (nvidia 7600GT but not using the SLI feature). The
64-bit CD is ordered.

Windows doesn't want to load properly with more than 2 GB of RAM installed!
I've pooled all the ram in the house and have 5 sticks of DDR ram, that show
no sign of being bad. 2 of these are 1 GB sticks.

No matter how I arrange the ram in the (4) slots*, the OS doesn't want to
boot up when the sum of the ram sticks is above 2 GB: I get as far as a
loading screen (no windows icon though) and then it stays black.

*The one exception occurs when I load them in as such: [1GB] [1GB][one
specific 512kb stick][blank] where Windows loads and recognizes the 2.5GB of
RAM but then forgets I have an external hard drive.

I need the max amount of RAM I can get as well as access to my external HDD
due to the nature of the work involved (music fonts take a lot of space...).
Is there a way to fix or bypass the problem I'm experiencing?

Thanks much.

Might be that a card or cards of ram are no good,or the ram isnt all
compatable
with each other &/or with the board.Single sided ram doesnt always work with
2 sided, the mfg configuration is incompatable with the 2.Try running
microsoft
memory tester,i'd imagine you'll get failed
tests.http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp You can/could also clear the
CMOS
on the board, power off, remove battery, move the CMOS pin from 1-2 to 2-3 for
.45 seconds or so,then back to 1-2,replace battery,start pc.You'll need to
reset
the BIOS though,as this resets it to factory default.

This should be posted to a Vista group, not an XP group. Once you get to the
Vista groups do a search, I seem to recall a solution to this has been
posted more than once.

You cannot just mix whatever kinds of RAM that you have laying around. They
need to be
compatible. Assuming that the motherboard has enough memory address lines,
then it is
certainly capable of booting with 4 GB RAM.

Thanks all for the replies. Sorry about posting this in XP section (I
googled microsoft help and wound up here heh).

Well I ran the memory test that came with Windows on all the ram sticks and
they seem to be in working order. I am, however, ignorant when it comes to
compatibility...I read that you could mix 512 sticks and 1GB sticks as long
as you did it correctly (paired, though I guess that that means
[A][A]).

I'll try to borrow another 1 gig stick from somewhere to see if that'll
work.

I know, however, that 4 512 sticks make the computer angry, then again the
4th stick is a different brand of RAM than the others.

If anyone has any advice, I'm all ears though! TY much.

It is the speed capability of the RAM modules that need to be compatible.
Different brands don't matter. Everybody makes modules with several
different speed ratings.

For example, if you install a RAM which is intended to be used on a 400 MHZ
front side bus onto a computer which features a 533 MHZ bus, the module will
not be reliable. So, what you need to check is the speed rating of each of
these modules.
