RAM usage

The amount of RAM on my computer is 512MB. I am having a problem with some
games on my PC such that they will not operate correctly. Contacting the game
owner, they tell me I have too much RAM in use. When I go to "DXDIAG" I find
448MB of RAM with 403 used and 682 available. Checking the direct x listing I
find I have at least 200 of them and do not know what they are for and so do
not want to delete any until I know what they are and if I need them. I have
tried removing items from the task bar which has helped reduce the usage but
it is still too high. What do the games have to do with RAM usage when they
have already been downloaded onto my computer. I expect that they are on the
disk and would have nothing to do with RAM usage. What else can be done to
reduce RAM usage. Also where can I find a list of all direct x names which
will explain what they are. Most of these arrived on my computer on 8/4/04
which I believe is when SP2 came out.Examples:- ir41_32.ax, ir41_qc.dll,
ir41_qcx.dll, ir50 same as ir41, ksproxy.ax. I believe ir 41 and ir 50 have
something to do with AOL which I do not have on my computer and believe that
I can delete them both. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

What games? What does "not operate correctly" mean? What happens when
you try? If you get an error message, please quote it verbatim.

Contacting the game
owner,

"Owner"? What do mean by "game owner"? Do you not own the game
yourself?

they tell me I have too much RAM in use.

Unless you mean "manufacturer" rather than "owner," I wouldn't believe
him. I'm reluctant to believe it even if you mean manufacturer.

"Of them"? What is "them"?

not want to delete any until I know what they are and if I need them. I have

"Downloaded"? Are these pirated games that you downloaded from some
pirate web site?

Or do you really mean "installed," not downloaded?

I expect that they are on the
disk and would have nothing to do with RAM usage.

When you run a program, it uses RAM.

your posting is confusing.

here is a link to some of the
files you mentioned:

having 512 megs of ram
is a very respectable amount
for virtually all needs.

if anything, a well written
game may complain that it
needs more ram and not less
as you mentioned.

HI Ken

Thank you for your response. As a novice I thought that I had written up my
querie fairly well, but I guess not. I will try again. and try to answer your
questions.
Re: What games--I have purchased, downloaded and installed on my computer
games from Phantom efx. Most games have bonuses that come up periodically. On
all games except one the bonuses work just fine. One one the bonus hangs up
and does not operate correctly. Phantom efx said I am using too much RAM. I
shut down some items on the task bar and found that going to dxdiag as they
suggested I could see the RAM in use as provided to you in my qestion was
reduced. I tried the game again and the bonus worked much better. Thus the
RAM usage question. There was no error message associated with the problem
with the game.

Re: contacting the game owner, Owner See the para above. I own the games
purchased from Phantom EFX.

Re:- they tell me I have too much RAM in use. See above para.

Re:- of them? What is them? When you go to dxdiag and see the RAM in use,
you can go to the next page (click on this at the bottom of the page) and up
comes the list of active x items of which I said previously looked like a
listing of about 200.(didn't count them all).Phantom EFX suggested that I go
to dxdiag to see the amount of RAM used which I sent to them and they then
advised I was using too much RAM.

Re:-Downloaded:- These ganes are not pirated. They were purchased from
Phantom EFX downloaded and installed on my computer as stated above.

I did not know that when you run a program that you use RAM. I assume from
this you mean that even when installed on my comuter and I click on a game to
bring it up that it uses RAM. Is this correct. Why would the game use RAM?

Re:- What else can be done to----etc. Your help in this part would be
appreciated.

By eliminating some direct x items from my list of approximately 200 would
this reduce the amount of RAM being used. Also should I increase the amount
of virtual memory to provide more RAM available.

I don't know anything about these games, and can't help with the
specific issues you're experiencing, but I'll address your questions
above.

Yes, when you run any program, it is copied from your drive into RAM
and runs in RAM. That's what RAM is for--to run programs in and to
hold data for those programs. Programs can not run directly from the
hard drive.

Thank you for replying to my question. I have gone to the sites that you
provided. The Intel page shows the examples that I provided in my question. I
do not have an Intel processor on my computer. It is an AMD processor. Would
it be ok to remove these Intel examples shown in my question.

Thank you for your assistance.
