RAM upgrade

Hello all,

I'm sorry if this is not the right place for this type of question, but here
goes.

I am considering a RAM upgrade on my PC. I currently have 512 MB installed
and would like to move up to 1 GB (if supported). My computer is a Compaq
Presario, and Compaq tells me that the motherboard can only support 768 MB.
However, I have done a little research on my motherboard and found that it is
the same as a FIC AZ31 (which I believe is true - the board looks absolutly
identical). This FIC AZ31 board, however, can support 1.5 GB.

I'm a little curious about the difference. I would like to know if there is
a program or utility that will run in Windows XP that will probe the
motherboard for the maximum supported RAM. Does such a program exist?

Thanks in advance,

Francis

I would go by what Compaq says. It IS their computer and they know how they
have configured the bios, hardware, board components etc!

Check your motherboard's manual regarding how much RAM can it support.
Windows xp can handle up to 4GB of RAM.

It is a matter of weather or not the mobo will handle 512 MB chips vs. 256
MB chips.
Borrow a 512 MB chip and install it. Go into the BIOS so it registers
correctly (cls 3 vs. cls 2).
If you get that far it will probably boot up, then you know it will handle
1.5 GB.

The mobo manual may even have a little * footnote about 768 has been tested
but 1.5 has not etc.
SO make sure you have high spec memory chips.
If it will not boot with a 512 MB chip then you need 3 256 MB chips for 768
MB. (Which is still a lot of memory for a personal computer.)

No; you need to take the makers specs. And if Compaq say that I would
believe them: they may have minor custom features on the board so that
it is not exactly that model. You could of course borrow 512 and see
what happens

Click on www.crutial.com key in the model of your PC and their system will
not only tell you exactly how much RAM your machine will take but the type
of RAM and their prices aren't bad either.
