RAM not working

I recently had to reformat my computer. I tried installing a 512 MB ram card and it didn't work. I reinstalled the two original ram cards that came with the computer and now only the 64mb ram card is working. I only have two slots for the ram and both have ram in it the way it was when I got the computer. Can anyone help me to fix or diagnose this problem? thanks.
