Raid question

I've built many PCs, but never a RAID configuration. Am I correct in
assuming that two 40GB HDs in a RAID 0 configuration will have a total
capacity of 80GB (less some overhead)? Also what performance can I expect
from a S-ATA RAID 0 configuration compared to two separate IDE drives?

Thanks.

Hi,
RAID 0 is actually striping your drives.
I.e. data is broken up in parts and each part is written
to a separate disk.
Results in faster IO (no real RAID back-up though)

I once read a test between a 200GB IDE and a 120GB S-ata.
The difference in speed was neglectible. I think I read
it on Tom Hardware's web site.

yes, in raid 0 two 40gb show as 80gb in disk manager.

There is no overhead in raid 0, you get the full amount of disk space. If
you want performance, go with the Western Digital Raptor drives (10,000 rpm,
150m/s). In tests I've ran, they greatly improve performance over IDE
drives. They cost a bit more and the 74Gb drive is geared more towards
gamers whereas the 36.6Gb drive was geared toward low end servers.
