Quiet Headphones

My laptop is a HP, but I've seen this same problem on Compaqs also. Whenever
I plug in my headphones, the sound(s) is/are real quiet. The volume is all
the way up and the sound(s) is/are little improved. If I were to unplug them
halfway out, it fixes the problem. I tried different headphones and have the
same problem. I feel like I need to push my headphones into my skull to
listen.

It should be the other way around, half way out is quiet (as it is receiving
a lesser currnet), while all the way in should be the volume set. Sounds like
a bad jack to me.

Are you using mono headphones? This could cause the problem. Be sure that
your headphones are stereo. Look at the plug. A mono plug will have a silver
rounded end, then a small black insulator ring between it and the rest of
the body of the plug. The stereo plug will have the silver end, the
insulator, a short silver section, then another insulator ring between it
and the rest of the plug body.
