QuickTime problem

We have a Windows 2000 workstation at SP4, with IE6 patched to the
latest updates. We have installed QuickTime Player version 6.5.1 from
the Apple Web site. The problem: some QuickTime movies simply refuse
to play. Attempts to play these from within IE6 result in the "broken
icon". This behavior is inconsistent... some movie files play fine,
others don't. We can sometimes, but not always, save a copy of the
..mov file to the local hard drive and play the file using QuickTime as
a workaround. In some cases, attempts to save the file to the hard
drive and play it result in a message that the file isn't a format
that QuickTime can recognize. The primary user of the machine
attempted to play a QuickTime movie the first time using Windows media
player, so we at first suspected a file association issue. However,
we have tried using the control panels for the players to set the file
associations, we've reinstalled QuickTime (the "recommended" install
doesn't seem to make any difference), we've reinstalled IE6 and
repatched it to see if that would take care of the broken icon issue
in the Web browser page... nothing seems to help. I can play the movie
files that won't play on this person's system on my Windows XP system.
It also has QuickTime 6.5.1 installed.

I at first thought this might be a user profile issue, but at this
point it doesn't seem to matter who is logged in on this one system.
I have also checked the Apple web site regarding the ActiveX plug-in
issue... the check page indicates that QuickTime is properly
installed. I have also followed suggestions to check the registry key
for Internet Explorer plugins... the plugin key has no entries in it.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
