I got this question at an interview and wanted to know how
you guys would answer it...you have just purchased a new
computer for a user and must take everything from his old
computer and put it on his new computer..what are the
steps you would take to perform this task...i said back up
info first, check what files/folders he has and uses, and
what permissions were assigned to him and the interviewer
just stared at me :( i know this is not a question to
post on this forum but I just needed some advice.

PS. Friend said he downloads operating systems illegally.
Can you really download a operating system from sites like
kazaa??? dont think its possible.

Hi,

.........take everything from his old computer and put it on his new
computer.

Put the new hard drive in the old computer as a slave, drag everything
of value to the new drive. You could also just use a program like
Nortons Ghost to clone the old drive to the new, but then you'll also
need to do a repair install of the OS as there'll be a lot of new
hardware when you put the clone back into the new box.

.........PS. Friend said he downloads operating systems illegally.

No doubt about it. You can also find just about any full program you've
ever heard of for download out there too.

That was not a terrible answer, sure, could've been worder a bit better,
big deal. Are you sure you want to work for someone like that? I wouldn't.

Steve,

The answer was ok. At least it showed I have some kind of
idea of what to do. I got the 2nd interview so i guess it
was a ok answer. Its a entry level help desk job for a new
college grad. But i just didnt like the look on the
interviewers face when i said that. Thanks again Steve for
your input. Theres no way I could have came up with "take
new hard drive and hook it up to old comp as slave". I
know what that means but have never done it.
