Quick launch taskbar

I have accumulated many icons on my task bar as I've
installed new software. I really don't need these on the
task bar and I think it's affecting the performance of my
machine. But I can't find a way to remove them. Any
suggestions?

Right click and delete, or drag off the task bar to the desktop.
