quick extensions question

Matt

I've been having problems on an older site with a form I created in FP2003
and after a little searching and a few questions in here I determined that
it was a problem on the hosts end. Their tech support says that my site is
missing the _vti_bin but I uninstalled/reinstalled/republished my site. This
is the first host I've used who's control panel doesn't have the choice of
"clean up old extensions" after an uninstall... could this be part of the
problem?

How is your host checking for the _vti_bin ??
It's not visible using Windows Explorer or FrontPage, it's
only visible in the management console.

Also, the _vti_bin is created when the extensions are installed as it is
part of the extensions

Have your host reinstall the extensions for your domain.

I don't know how they checked.. all I know is that after a day and a half
they replied and said that the _vti_bin was missing, and this was after my
uninstall/reinstall/publish from my control panel. I told them to reinstall
the extensions... but quite frankly I don't see how the file was lost in the
first place, that's why I asked about the clean up old extensions option.I'm
starting to think that they don't know what happened and just threw that out
there.

Well, there's really no "old" extensions to clean up.
They could be corrupt, but reinstalling them "normally" clears up cleans up everything.

Now, in an effort to confuse your even more ( not really ) the files that are the "extensions"
really don't exist within your domain on the server, installing extensions creates "virtual paths"
to where they really live on the server.
On a windows server it's: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\50
for the 2002 version of the extensions

If there is no _vti_bin visible when your host checks your extensions using server administration,
then that means that the extensions are not properly installed for your domain,
and possibly not properly installed on the server.
