Questions about upgrading my CPU

J

John Wilson

I have the Asus P4B266. It has the P-IV 1.8ghz, but I want to put the
Pentium IV 3.7ghz in it. I know Asus has a bios update to accommodate
processors over 2.9ghz. I really want to upgrade to the Pentium® 4 Processor
Extreme Edition supporting Hyper-Threading Technology, 3.7ghz, 1066mhz FSB.
My current bus speed is 533mhz, and the motherboard has the 845D chipset.

1) Do I really have to worry about the Pin Count and Socket Type? If so, how
do I find this info? I don't see it in the Asus manual.

2) Can I assume because there is already a P4 1.8ghz on the board that a 3.2
will fit and match just fine? If no, why?

3) Is there anything else I need to worry about?

1. Yes!
2. No!
3. You'll need to purchase a newer motherboard!

According to ASUS, your motherboard will support
up to a 2.4GHz Intel CPU.

This is what the manual states..

Currently, ASUS P4B266 series motherboard can support the latest Northwood
Pentium 4 processor to 2.4G.

Check with Asus before assuming that a BIOS upgrade will achieve what you
want..

No. This Intel Prescott P4 CPU needs a motherboard that can
operate at 800 MHz FSB and a more recent chipset, such as the
i865 or i875. Not even a bios update will make the older ASUS
P4B capable of running the P4 Prescott, even if the motherboard
comes with a Socket 478. A better solution would be to upgrade
to an ASUS P4P800SE-Deluxe along with associated memory and
other peripherals that will work with the Prescott P4 CPU.
What you really wanted is a completely new system based on,
for instance, Intel's Socket 775 design with the i945 or i955
chipset, per our specs. It is 2.5 generations newer than your
P4B.

Thanks everybody. I believe the manual came out before there ever was
anything higher than a 2.4ghz. I have posted a question to the Asus forum on
the Asus website, but it could be quite some time before I get a reply
there.

We are in no doubt that the manual was published before the advent of the
bigger CPU's, but that doesn't alter the fact that a BIOS upgrade will not
automatically make all socket 478 boards compatible with all 478.. CPU's..

Your P4 is a Socket 478 which means it has 478 small pins
that stick into holes on the socket. The newer CPU is a 775
which uses a different construction with pad contacts...

John,

As Carey said, your board will only support up to 2.4 ghz. You need a new
set up before getting this.

My AOpen motherboard is similar, same Intel chipset onboard. CPU bus speed
is 400/533 MHz.

Upgrade cpus, look for those that run at 533 MHz cpu bus speed.

The top end, 2.4 GHz was at the time of writing the manual. Mine says
similar but says 2.4 GHz+ to clarify if Intel would make faster cpus at that
bus speed noted above after publishing the manual. This is normal.

Best bang for the buck would be 3.0 GHz Celeron while window shopping last
night.
