Questions about freeware that "hides" files.

Recently I've read posts about freeware that "hides" folders and files
so that they are not viewable on the screen or to other programs on the
computer, and I'd like to ask a few questions about that.

* How does the app "hide" the files and folders?
* Is this "hiding" thorough enough for the files and folders to be
secure?
* If hidden, do those files have to be encrypted to achieve security?
* Once hidden, can those files and folders be brought back (and if they
can, then what software can do it)?

Thanks!

Other methods, usually involving setting hidden-flags in operating
system and/or applications, are merely cosmetic and can be easily
circumvented.
