Freeware program to hide files/folders wanted

Cosmo Brown

I have been looking for a while for a freeware program to hide
files/folders. Google lists plenty but they all turn out to be
trialware, shareware, payware, etc.

Is there a true freeware file hider that works (and does not show the
files when DOS is used).

If there is please let me know.

TIA

Hi, :)
I know Hide Folders. (for Win98 systems). http://www.fspro.net/hf/ I
don't know if your folders will be hidden under DOS. Sorry! :-(
Hide Folders XP went shareware.

At my opinion, a better solution is TrueCrypt.
http://www.truecrypt.org/ With this you can create a virtual drive at a
file, and mount-unmount it. Choose your desirable size (100KB for some
plain text files or many GB for DVD backup) and a password (or better a
keyfile). Be Caution!!! Backup your keyfile. If you 'll lose this, you
lost your files. Create an account at SourceForge (
https://sourceforge.net/ click at create account at top of page )and
monitor the package (for updates notify) (once you log-in goto
https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=120388 and click
the envelop icon).
I also wrote a review for Clif's Newsletter.

BE CAUTION again!!! It's an encrypting program. BACKUP AND SAFELY STORE
your keyfile!!! or you will curse me. :)

I hope this will help.

I downloaded TrueCrypt awhile back, and set out to explore it, but
after reading 10-12 pages of the manual, I'll confess I was a bit
intimidated. I'm sure that once you GET it set up ok, it is pretty easy
to use, but they do not make it clear **exactly** what steps one takes
for the various options. There are different coding choices, different
types of 'containers', and many warnings...all couched in slightly fuzzy
technical terminology with no translation.

I'm usually pretty good at working thru things, but after setting up a
test folder, I'm not sure I have it right.....i.e., I don't know whether
I actually "mounted a volume" or not...

so...do you know anywhere that someone has any sort of tutorial that
gives examples and suggestions about how much of that long manual one
can safely skim over and what is absolutely essential to follow, save,
backup, and remember?

(I don't expect anyone to hold my hand and trade posts for a week....
;>), just looking for a possible non-geek "quick start" guide)
