QUESTION: Windows XP Upgrade or Full version??

I recently had to put my old Sony VAIO to sleep. It had come with Win98
on it.

Does anyone know if I would qualify for the Upgrade version if I was
installing Windows XP on a new PC? The Sony PC did not come with an
actual Win98 CD, just a recovery CD. However, I know that this does
contain the full version of 98 and that there were no "hidden"
partitions with the full install since I had to replace the hard drive
once before.

I would hate to purchase the Upgrade and it not work, but at the same
time, I would hate to spend the extra cash if I didn't need to.

Thanks in advance!

If the Sony copy is recognized by the installation program as a real
"Win98", then it may work. OEM copies do qualify when using an
upgrade version of XP, however, you state your Sony CD is actually a
recovery CD. Therefore, it may or may not work. Don't you have any
friends who would let you borrow a copy of 98 in case it doesn't?

With xp upgrade,as you boot to xp cd to install,at installation of xp you'll
get "cannot locate version of windows, please install cd for 95,98,ME,2000,
or 4.0" so w/o any past versions it wouldnt let you proceed. Also,in xp home
pages, locate the qualify for xp upgrade section, see if you would.

You'd qualify for the Upgrade license only if you were going to install
it on that defunct Sony Vaio, upgrading it from Win98 to WinXP.

You have an OEM license for Win98P. An OEM version must be sold with a
piece of hardware (normally a motherboard or hard rive, if not an entire
PC) and is _permanently_ bound to the first PC on which it's installed.
An OEM license, once installed, is not legally transferable to another
computer under _any_ circumstances.
The Sony PC did not come with an
actual Win98 CD, just a recovery CD.

An OEM Recovery CD cannot act as a qualifying media for the upgrade.
The Upgrade CD checks to see if a qualifying OS
is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks you to insert the
installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately, an OEM
"Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must have a
true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and *.cab
files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.

No OEM versions of Windows are not transferable. Pick up any Windows 9X/Me
upgrade or full version CD from eBay or other source, then you can use the
XP upgrade to clean install.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
