Question re msconfig settings

I am running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 service pack 2. Every time
I boot up I start in Selective Startup mode and msconfig comes up.

I select Normal Startup, click apply, then select the startup tab. All the
items under the startup tap are selected. I disable most of them, and then
select apply.

I then get the warning about the settings have been changed and I need to
restart.

When I restart the computer I am back at the beginning of this message in a
never ending loop.

Any Suggestions?

You get this message...

[[You have used the System Configuration Utility to change the way Windows
starts. The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or
Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility
to run every time Windows starts. Choose the Normal Startup mode on the
General tab to start Windows normally]]

because you disabled startup items using msconfig.

msconfig is intended to be used as a troubleshooting tool not a startup
manager.

Other people will post and tell you to...
Check: "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility
when Windows starts" and click OK.

I do not recommend that.

Get one or both of these instead.

StartMan is a GOOD Utility, I use it all the time, especially after
installing software. Everything you install wants to run at startup.
StartMan shows where something starts from. Check out the Help in StartMan
also! You can either have StartMan disable startups or just use it to find
where something is loading from.

StartMan v1.3.96 Direct download

Startup Control Panel is another pretty good application.

[[Startup Control Panel is a nifty control panel applet that allows you to
easily configure which programs run when your computer starts. It's simple
to use and, like all my programs, is very small and won't burden your
system. A valuable tool for system administrators!]]

Download the EXE Version and just extract the executable wherever you want.

Msconfig is designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a "startup
configurer." To cease the selective startup notifications, either
return your settings to the way they were, or permanently remove the
undesirable programs from your startup configuration.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

Curious - but why are you deselecting startup items?
You mention nothing about "problems" or "troubleshooting"-If you are going
so strictly because of items you do not want in startup - then just check
the "Don't show this message....".

How did I know that someone would post with ""Don't show this message..."?
