msconfig

Recently used msconfig on two machines both using windows XP to reload and
trouble shoot software and now after going thru normal startup and rebooting
I keep getting a screen advising me that I am in diagnostice /selective mode
when I restart computer. The actual screen states that I must select the
"normal mode" under the general tab to undo changes made in the in the config
utility. I have done this several times and the same message keeps popping
up evertime, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as it becomes
rather annoying to go thru this all the time. The system to my knowledge is
not in this state as everything is working fine?

There should be a check box at the bottom of that message that says "Don't
show this message at startup". You check that and it won't show up again.
If that's not there, then don't know.

After reselecting Normal Mode in msconfig did you click Apply and OK or
just OK?

Hope this helps.

if you can't find
the checkbox mentioned
in the responding post,

then you might want
to utilize a utility called
autoruns from microsoft.com

with it you can actually
delete those unwanted
items found in msconfig
and normalize the startup
process.

Remember, Msconfig was designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a
"startup configurer." Use MSConfig to determine the location of the
command that is attempting to start the program, and remove it. To
cease the selective startup notifications, either return your settings
to the way they were, or permanently remove the undesirable programs
from your startup configuration.

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the system registry, primarily in
the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
