I have a simple question (I think). I have recently gotten a high speed
internet connection from my cable company (Cox) for my home. I have a
desktop computer running XP Pro and a laptop with XP Home and built in
wireless networking. I have a cable modem and a wireless router set up so
the laptop can get the web wirelessly. It works fine. I would also like to
get the printer (Brother HL-1240 laser (low end)) that is physically hooked
up to the desktop computer to work wirelessly with the laptop. Some people
tell me I have to buy a print server some say I don't have to. I am
confused. Help please.

You do not need to buy a print server, or to put it differently - XP Pro
makes and excellent print server. You can share the printer on your XP Pro
machine: Click Start/Printers and Faxes. Right click on the Printer's icon
and select Properties. Click the Sharing tab and select Share this printer.
On the laptop: Start/Printers and Faxes. Click on Add Printer and select
Network printer.

If you are unable to add the network printer on the laptop, or unable to
print to it, your network is probably not properly configured.

You don't have to buy a print server, if your dektop and notebook are in a
workgroup via the wireless network. Both the pc's have to talk to each other

Hi.

It is really down to simple computation.

You do not need a Printer server but you have to keep the computer with the
printer ON in order to use the printer (electricity cost money). Massive
printing might bog down the computer with the printer while some one is
working on it.

Given that Printer Server can be found for less that $40, depending on you
habits and how you Network is used, Printer server might be a better
solution.

Will the product found at that link work wirelessly?
