Question on using Microsoft IIS Server

J

Jim

Just installed IIS Server on one of my Windows XP Pro systems. I can access
this server through my LAN but not from a remote PC. My network uses a cable
modem plus a router - is this my problem? If so, how do I solve it?

TIA

Jim

In addition to opening Port 80, you need to forward it to the machine that's
running IIS. You'll have to consult your router's documentation for
information on doing this, since they all vary in the method.

Hi,

It's relatively safe. As you are opening your system to the world at large,
you will benefit from using the Baseline Security Analyzer, get the download
here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/tools/Tools/MBSAhome.asp

It will tell you what you may need to change in your IIS settings, and point
out weaknesses in your system's defense from intrusion.

Make sure that machine is fully patched, since IIS can be an intrusion target. Take a look at Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsahome.asp?frame=true, as an additional security patch check over and above what Windows Update says you need. You should also tighten up the settings by using the IIS lockdown tool, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=DDE9EFC0-BB30-47EB-9A61-FD755D23CDEC. In effect you have stepped over the line of being a typical user and need to kick up your expertise to administer the web server properly. There is a Microsoft IIS newsgroup, which would be a good place to learn more about the ins and outs of running a web server.
