Question of Etiquette

If suggestons made from the community don't solve the issue, is it generally
preferred in the community that I press the "No" button when asked if the
reply was helpful?

Kind of a moot point. The only place that voting option exists is through
Microsoft's web interface. However, I think you'll find that the majority of
posters don't use that web interface, so they'll be unaware of your
response.

I would think you would want to post back to the thread and explain why the
solution did or did not work so that you can get additional help.

I don't know that anyone would know if you clicked a button.

You know, I don't know if there is a specific set etiquette for this that
most people follow, but I have one that I follow myself. Basically, the only
reason I'd ever click "No," is if somebody went out of their way to be
unhelpful, knowingly give blatantly wrong information, was rude or
disrespectful, or any other such immature act. I personally feel that, if
someone is trying to be helpful, it is somewhat insulting to claim that their
post wasn't helpful. If it doesn't really answer my question at all, I just
don't click yes or no.

Also, I sure as heck wouldn't click "No" (other than the reasons I described
earlier) if it was not even my question, but I was just reading a thread
started by somebody else that interested me. That is just me. I'm sure some
folks would say I'm not using it right, but I just feel that is the polite
way to do things.

There are two sets of buttons. One is 'Was this helpful' which is available
for anyone browsing/searching the answers. The second set is available to
the original poster 'Did this answer your question'.

By clicking No (if it wasn't helpful), you are helping in getting quality
answers moved to the top when others search (at least in theory).

Maybe this is another case of things being a bit different since I use the
web interface version of the newsgroups. Clicking the buttons doesn't seem to
make any difference in the position of the post. It stays in order of date by
the first post. If it was your thread, it does help to say that somebody's
response answered your question if it did. First off, if marks that their
post answers the question. Also, it gives the person answering your question
the much deserved credit in their records for having answered another
question.

If it isn't your thread, as far as the web interface goes, it seems pretty
meaningless to use either button, except that posts will be marked helpful if
a certain number of folks click yes.

You misunderstood. It will position the post when a person does a search.

Ah. Guess I need some sleep. ;-)
