Question for Carey

C

Connie

Carey, I tried opening the download as well as saving
it. Each time I restarted my PC. It says it has restored
the tabs to my Registry but the Display is the same and
still shows only the Properties tab. Does it matter where
the download is saved or opened to? I used documents and
settings because that's what came up. What am I doing
wrong? Thanks!

Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and
scroll
down to Item #285 (right column) and click on "Restore
All Display
Tabs" to download a registry fix.

Temporarily disable your antivirus program by right-clicking
on your antivirus icon in the notification area and selecting
Disable Auto-Protect. Then run Kelly's fix again and reboot.
If you stall have a problem, perform a thorough virus scan.

Boot into Safe Mode and try running the repair file.

I tried running it in Safe Mode and it didn't work so I
uninstalled AVG and turned off my Firewall and ran the
repair. I rebooted each time. It still did not restore
the tabs. The tabs are there when I bring it up in Safe
Mode though. I guess I can always go in that way to make
changes but it makes no sense and sure is unhandy. Any
other suggestions? Thanks for all your help, Carey.

A program may be doing it. Don't worry about disabling AVG (it's just a general purpose piece of advice - some AV programs will block the repair tool - AVG obviously doesn't). If kelly's script doesn't help then it may not be a policy causing it. Her repairs are all per user only.

It will probably be a program/driver/service from your video card manufacturer.

The fact it works in safe mode means 1 of 3 things
1. What I just said
2. It's a per user setting/program (can you confirm this by logging onto another account NOT in safe mode) and you fixed an unbroken user or there is a faulty per user program.
3. The same policies that Kelly resets are also valid under local machine. Right click Kelly's file, choose Edit. There are two keys with numerous values.

Type regedit in Start Run in the account you are having problems. Navigate to those keys and make sure those values don't exist or if they do they equal either 0x00000000 or 00 00 00 00 (depending on what component put them there - both are valid and mean 0). Then repeat by navigating to the same keys but HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE rather than HKEY_CURRENT_USER and check they are absent or =0.

Then type msconfig in Start Run and click diagnostic startup and reboot. Does it go away during a diagnostic startup.

Also look on both the Startup tab in msconfig and services tab for something related to your video card (or monitor I suppose).

I knew better than to mess with this and now I have more
problems than I did. I have the only account. Checking
the values under regedit, both keys are set to "default"a
and say 'value not set'. I typed msconfig and changed to
diagnostic. The problem still exists BUT I had it set for
selective startup and now it's set to normal start up and
I cannot change it. I can choose selective start up and
check the boxes but I cannot APPLY. I no longer care
about the Display Panel. I will make changes in Safe
Mode. How do I get it back to a selective start up?
Please!

I can't get mine to not Apply. Have you unticked anything.

It's probably your video driver anyway. Video drivers are used in Diagnostic but not in Safe Mode (there is a special MS video drive used then).

If I switch from Normal to Diagnostic, Apply comes up.
Then I can choose selective start up and check the
appropriate boxes and Apply. However, it reverts right
back to Normal start up and doesn't apply the new
settings. I have no idea what the video card is or how to
find out. The only thing I see in start up that might be
video is ImgIcons?? I know what everything else is and
it's not video. How can I find out and if the video card
is the problem, what can I do about it?
