Question about Windows Explorer

P D Sterling

I know this sounds picky, but it annoys me that when I open Windows
Explorer, it lands on "Start Menu," which I would have opened if thats where
I wanted it to be. I would prefer it to be at the top or on the F: drive.
Any cheer?

Also, we used to hit CTRL + * and it would expand the entire tree - has that
gone the way of the Edsel? Any advice would be appreciated.

When you open Windows Explorer it does not open to Start menu (unless of course you chose to Explore The Start menu).

Edit the shortcut's "Target" to read;
%systemroot%\explorer.exe /e, F:\
Where F:\ is the drive and or directory you wish to expand.

I know you know what you're talking about, however, I'm unsure what shortcut
we're talking about. I'm talking about seeing a graphic, right clicking to
save, and there is "Save Target As ..." which leads into a place where I do
not wish to save, and doesn't provide for editing, OR "Print Target," which
I don't wish to do. Thanks for trying. If you can expand on your comments, I
would be grateful.

This has nothing to do with opening Windows Explorer. When saving IE
downloads the default is the last used directory.

Certainly. Basically, all you need do is modify the target field of
your Windows Explorer shortcut to point where you want it. For example,
"%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e ,f:\" (without the quotes) would open
Explorer at the root of the F: drive.

I believe you're looking for <ALT> + <*>.

Are you right clicking the Start button?

Start button right click menu.

You cannot change this. These are all shortcuts to the 2 Start Menu folders
for the user that is logged on. The User and All Users.

The Start button right click menu contains:
Open
Explore
Search
Properties
Open All Users
Explore All Users
And others depending on what software you have installed.

When right clicking the Start button and selecting Explore, you are not
opening Windows Explorer per se. You are opening a Start Menu folder.

You have four choices of how to open two folders; Open, Explore, Open
All Users and Explore All Users. These are just shortcuts to the two
folders.

Depending on a bunch of settings, but generally...
Explore opens folders with Folders pane on the left.
Open opens folders with common tasks showing on the left.

Right click Start button | Open defaults to %userprofile%\Start Menu with
the
Common Tasks pane showing.

Right click Start button | Explore defaults to %userprofile%\Start Menu with
the Folders pane displayed.

Right click Start button | Open All Users defaults to
%allusersprofile%\Start Menu with the Common Tasks pane showing.

Right click Start button | Explore All Users defaults to
%allusersprofile%\Start Menu with the Folders pane displayed.

The %userprofile%\Start Menu folder is the Start Menu folder for whoever
happens to be logged on, i.e. the Current User.

The whole context menu is for the Start Menu and nothing else.

How any folder opens depends on how different options are set on your
machine. Basically Open will open a folder with Common Tasks displayed and
Explore will open a folder with the Folder Pane displayed.
