Question about Vista x64

Will

So far I have only used the 32bit version of Vista
But I'm considdering wether or not to buy the 64bit edition when it goes to
retail.

I have about 20 years experience in building pc's and have never yet bought
a pc from a store

I've always used a petium system but now I'm looking into building myself an
AMD system
does anyone have any recommendations as to what would be the best setup that
will be likely to the most stable.
Money isn't really a major issue however having said that buying all the
high end components won't be a guarentee that the system will be stable with
windows Vista.
can anyone tell me what setup has given them the least hassles as what kind
of Cpu , ram, video card, sound card, motherboard, ect ?

I've been running Vista on an Asus A8V (socket 939) with an AMD64 3400 and
2GB of ram with very little hardware issues. You may want, however, to focus
on a board using PCIe as opposed to the older AGP standard. For video, I'm
using an ATI 9600 and the glass was fully supported early on.

Dear Will
I am using Fijitsu&Siemens ScaleoP, which have AMD64 Athlon 3600 , 1Gb
memory 190Gb internal & 160Gb external hard drives, Realtec’s AC97 sounchip
and ATI’s X550 graphics. It’is a medium range computer, but works well with
Vista RC1. So, the best bet for optimum system is read the Microsoft’s
hardware compatibility list and get supported components. If money mean
nothing, get AMD Operon dual core processor and ATI’s high end graphics card
– then get appropriate motherbioard.

yes a dual core is something I would certainly get as for the rest of the
components I guess a lot of reshearch would be called for
as for the graphics card the X550 sounds great but seeing I actually build
pc's I'll probably get to test a few others as well
my main issue is stability tho I've seen many pc's both PENTIUM and AMD that
have great specs and some of the best components in them only to be unstable

My system I'm using at the monent is pretty stable
Cpu P4 3.0Ghz prescott core (socket 478)
I Ghz of ram
Nvidia 6200 graphics 256Mb
Twanhan Dtv digal tv tuner
Pioneer D107 DVD burner
western digital 250Gb sata Hdd
western digital 40 Gb ide Hdd
512Mb of readyboost

I had an ATI 9700pro 128Mb 256bit video card installed which is a lot better
than the Nvidia 6200 it gave me a windows performance rating of 3.2 but I
had to downgrade to the Nividia 6200 which gives me a rating of 2.6
The 9700pro was giving me lots of errors and artifacting with Vista however
it works very well with XP pro strange and hard to explain but I guess it's
just one of those things

This computer started off as a single core AMD4000+ with a Gig of Ram
and two hard drives (both SATA).

Went to XP Pro (retail) from XP Pro (OEM) and was impressed [don't ask]

Installed 4 Seagate SATAs and was impressed

Put an extra 2 Gig RAM in and was impressed

Went to a dual core 4800+ and was shocked at the improvement

Tried both 32 bit and 64 bit Vista beta 2

Then RC1 in both flavours

But after 20 years experience I reckon you must be pretty savvy on the
hardware stuff anyway?
