The thing is, the drive recognizes DVD and DVD burnables, but not CDs
and CD-Rs. I'm not very well versed in this stuff so if it something
stupid or simple don't be too harsh...

Try this.
Put a Win XP or Win 98 installation disk into the drive. Restart your
computer and go into the bios. Change the boot order to start with the
CD-ROM drive instead of the hd-0. Save the changes and restart the computer.
If the computer can boot with the OS disk then the problem is a software
glitch. If it won't boot at all then it's a hardware problem with the drive.

I had a DVD-Rom that did that never got it to work. It even caused
problems when reinstalled as a second DVD-Rom. Its in a dump somewhere
contaminating the soil and poisoning the insects.
