Question about Games that Install DirectX

I already have Windows XP Pro, which has DirectX 9.0b on it.

what happens when I try to install older games that automatically installs
Directx 8.1 (for example)? will it try to install it over directx 9?

just wondering whether installing games will start confusing the systems'
directx version... thanks!

DirectX 8.1 will not install over DirectX 9.0b. However, the game
installation program may fail in the process. You'll just have to
try, however, you should make a complete verifiable backup of your
system prior to the installation of the game.
