I have a Compaq desktop with Win XP. I have a new Acer notebook with Win XP.
The TWO are networked through a Black Box Router. I will be travelling
abroad and I wanted to transfer all the Email folders from the desktop to
the notebook. When I tried to use The Files & Settings Transfer Wizard
(F.A.S.T.) I get the following ERROR msg:

" The wizard cannot locate your new computer. Make sure the new computer is
turned on and that your network is working properly.”

The two computers are ON and I can see them in the "View Workgroup
Computers".

What could be wrong and what can be done ?

In a thread in OE6 newsgroup, you were pointed to this article of MVP Gary
Woodruff's:

File & Settings Transfer Wizard:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm

See the section "How to Collect Data From Your Existing Install" and then
tell us what transfer method you used to collect the desktop data (i.e.,
direct cable [NB: this is not a router]; removable media; removable drive or
network drive)?

In the desktop, I used the Old Computer option and in selecting the transfer
method, I used the Home or small office option. It is then that I get this
ERROR msg.

“Home or small office network – A network is the best way to transfer large
amounts of data.”

This is essentially the same as a direct cable transfer except that the
wizard goes out and confirms that the other computer is available, asks you
to confirm which computer you wish to transfer to, and then does the
collection and transfer. If your new computer is not visible via the network
you will get an error that says, “The wizard cannot locate your new
computer. Make sure the new computer is turned on and that your network is
working properly.”

very bottom of the page)

Though the 2 machines may be connected to a router, the error is telling you
that they're not networked properly. Honestly, resolving this problem is
more trouble than it's worth just to copy your OE folders from the desktop
to the laptop.

If you still want to use FAST to do it, I suggest using the Removable Media
option with CD(s) or DVD(s). Otherwise, simply backup the desktop's DBX
files to CD or DVD and then import the backup set into OE on the laptop.
