Query performance on external data

Hello,
I'm concerned about query performance on external data. Should i import or
link to the external source and why?

hi,
i use both imported data and linked data in queries and
can't really tell the difference. sometimes there is an
issue with linked files if the network goes high traffic
or goes down but this is always temporary. I use a lot of
linked files to save disk space. why have the same data in
two working places. (backups are ok)
