Quake too dark on ATI 9800 Pro

I tried to fire up a game of Quake 1 the other day on my new video card.
The problem is its now too dark to play in GL mode. Both GLQuake and
GLQuake world client have the same problem. When I play in software mode,
its fine, fully bright, but *shudder* its software mode...yick.

Any advice?
