When I check my Norton AntiVirus History, I always see a new listing
informing me that "qttask.exe" has made new changes to my startup settings.
It's now up to 299 and counting. When I go to remove the file I'm warned that
doiing so may mess up my PC, so I usually chicken out and let it be.

Can "qttask.exe" be safely removed or is it necessary for this PC to operate
properly? If removal is doable, what are the exact steps necessary? Thanks
for any help you can give me with this.

It's Apple's Quick Time and if you don't use it, uninstall it from
Add/Remove Programs and the .exe will go poof and disappear.

Hi Diogenes,

Qttask.exe is a startup component for Apple's Quick Time and it speeds up
loading of Apple QuickTime when you use it. You can rename 'qttask.exe' to
'qttask.old' so QuickTime will not load on startup.

It's definitely NOT needed for any PC to operate properly.

You can use any number of programs to modify Quick Time Task so
that the Registry startup call is left in place but "Disabled". Doing it in
this manner prevents QuickTime from creating a new instance. One app
that can help is SysInternal's AutoRuns.

QuickTime is definitely a "Pest" when it comes to unwanted services
and Startup/Watchdog applets.

The date and time was 12/1/2008 10:19 AM, and on a whim, Alias pounded
out on the keyboard:
And as soon as you open it, it will create a new start up .exe. Best
thing is to uninstall Quick Time or live with the start up.

Disabling the key either by editing the registry or using Autoruns
effectively stops the process from running, until the next QT update.
No need to remove the program.

My thanks to all of you for your help with this. Ordinarily it wouldn't
bother me, but it seems like everytime I check Norton the "qttask.exe" file
has been modified yet again.

It's nice to know I have the option to get rid of it, without also disabling
this PC in the bargain. Thanks again!
