I recently reloaded my computer (a laptop with a dock) with XP SP1.
Everything was going fine until I installed my M-Audio Transit, an external
sound card.
Once I restarted, none of the USB devices connected to the dock worked.
Uninstalled the drivers, didn't help.
Uncovered the problem: system restore said that right after the Transit
drivers were installed, the Q816843 fix (relating to USB devices) was
installed. I never asked for this, nor did this happen when I did this a
year ago (with the same OEM SP1 cd).
I rolled back the two files "fixed" in Q816843,
5.1.2600.1187 Usbport.sys
5.1.2600.1187 Usbuhci.sys
to their previous versions (1106), and now the dock works again.
I'm pretty sure these files weren't included in the driver package for the
transit (because they are "sp2" files and the transit software was released
Aug 2003). Why/how did they get installed?
