Pwr / screensaver not running

Vista Business updated on Dell Vostro
No hw connected other than a recent HP printer, which is switched off when
not in use. No drivers updated, in fact there are no updated chipset / video
drivers available, only Vista critical updates added
PC belongs to Her indoors; Niether the Pwr Saving options kick in, nor does
the Vista std.screensaver, set to 10 mins. Excepting pwr options do appear
to kick in overnight. (PC left on) This is a recent problem
I've altered Pwr saveing options to no avail.
Any clues?
