puzzleing network question...

I have two computers that I am trying to network. #1 is named MIPOINT running
Windows XP (sp2 previously installed, then un-installed and sp1 re-installed)
and #2 is my wifes computer (moms-computer)running Windows XP home w/ SP2.
Before installation of SP2 on my computer (#1) I had a network set up with
with mine being the main computer and hers connecting through mine using
internet connection sharing. Both computers are connected with cat-5 cables
to a D-link DSS5+ switch and our DSL modem (ZyXEL Prestige PT-642ME) plugged
in to the up-link port. At this time I had Zone Alarm Pro 5.0.? installed on
my computer along with Norton System Works 2004.

After installing sp2 on both computers, I could not "see" the HP-PSC 750
printer connected to her computer. Previously I could. She could also see my
drives and files, I could not see hers although her computer showed up on the
network. I had my ip address as 192.168.0.1 and hers as 192.168.0.2 for our
local network and I had the DSL connection setup to automatically provide an
IP address.

After doing MUCH research and reading many posts on this message board and
others, it seemed that sp2 was causing BIG problems! I had the sp2 firewall
OFF on BOTH systems. We could BOTH access the internet as long as my
computer was on and connected.

I removed Zone Alarm Pro and all of Norton's and then sp2. Then un-installed
both network cards via device manager and re-built the network. Better! We
could share files back and forth AND I could use her printer from my
computer! HOWEVER, when I tried to re-build the internet connection, no-go.
I then re-installed sp1.

Here is where I am: when I choose "create a new connection" from Network
Tasks, then "connect to the internet: connect to the internet so you can
browse...", "set up my connection manually" the next option I need to choose
is grayed out - connect using a broadband connection that requires a username
and password - I can't choos this option. the only one available is to use
"choose a connection that is always on" which is not the case in my situation.

If I choose "setup a home or small office network", then "this computer
connects directly to the internet. The other computers on my network connect
to the internet through this computer". Then I choose the Local area
connection (not the 1394connection that I use for my video camera). I fill in
description, computer name and workgroup (MSHOME). Then when I click "NEXT" a
few times the wizard starts and I get the message "Cannot complete the
Network Setup Wizard".

At this point I haven't been able to figure out what to do next. This is
what I need help on!

Currently, I have my wifes computer setup as the main computer but I get the
same problems when I try to set miy computer up connecting through hers.

Not sure how to proceed next. Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

If I can manage this: you have the following physical layout:

DSL Modem
!
!
Ehternet Switch
! !
------------! !-------------
! !
PC1 PC2
192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2


Both PCs run XP: and you want both to connect to the internet and share
files and printers.

Only one of these should be established as the 'Gateway' to the internet: it
should manage and control the DSL modem and it should share the internet
connection with other computers.

Now: gven this little graphic, Startup the Network setup Wizard and choose
the options that meet the above configuartion and requirements.

It will work.

Try these steps to restore your access to the greyed out function "connect
using a broadband connection that requires a username and password "

Once you've got the ability to create the PPPoE connection on your computer,
it looks like between your experience and BAR's really cool diagram you'll
be well on your way.

QUESTION: Does the ZyXEL have the ability to persist the PPPoE connection
itself? This would save you many headaches I think....

Thank you for responding! Yes, the diagram is correct. 192.168.0.1 was the
gateway and had ics running. 192.168.0.2 connected through 192.168.0.1. I
had it up and working but sp2 messed it up along with my attempts to fix it!
I figured the easiest would be to get rid of sp1 and sp2 along with Zone
Alarm Pro and Nortons System Works. Get the "extra" stuff out, re-setup
network and add in 1 at a time. That's where I came up with problems noted.

The usual fix is to re-install your current service pack (SP1 or SP2).

Hi Randi,

I don't really know what could be causing these new problems.

I did another Google for your exact error message: "unregmp2.exe - Entry
Point Not Found" INCLUDING QUOTES and came up with many hits.

It looks like you are not alone.

The one at the immediate top of the list,
http://pcsupport.x-host.uni.cc/xp/unregmp2.html, proposes a way past this
glitch.

Maybe someone else has experience and knows more about this problem than I
do. The more brains the better.... ;-)

I'm getting a second error message during my in place upgrade. At the top of
the rectangle in blue background "unregmp2.exe - Entry Point Not Found"

then in gray background box below it "the procedure entry point GetIUMS
could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL"

clicking "ok" or the "x" box in the upper right corner does not make the
error go away!

Thanks for your reply. www.jsiinc.com gave two options. Delete 1 registery
key and re-try network setup. Did not work. Options still grayed out. Next
option was to delete a whole bunch of "...telphony..." keys and do an in
place upgrade of Windows XP. I am doing the upgrade now and had two error
messages. Both Device Installer Error. Windows could not load the installer
for (SDHost for the first message, Bluetooth for the second message).

Contact your hardware vendor. I clicked ok and the install is progressing.

Concerned about SDHost and Bluetooth though.
