Purple Monitor Syndrome in Linux and Windows

R

REC

I've recently started having PMS in both Linux and Windows. The weird
thing is that the degree of purpleness is apparently dependent on the
ratio of black (dark) pixels on the screen. For example, changing from
a white background to a black background, the purpleness goes from
"none" to "a lot", but the effect is (for now?) mostly mitigated both
by decreasing the resolution to 800x600 and decreasing the contrast
(when I go from all dark to all light quickly and the contrast is
higher than 95 it leads to a very strange effect where the monitor
looks like it is resetting).

The connections are all good, and it happens in both OS's, so I'm not
sure what to make of it. I haven't changed any video card settings in
either OS, either.

What do you think? Is it a gonner?
Any suggestions?
Thanks
