Purchased used laptop

I purchased a used Sony laptop from ebay.com. It came with MS Win XP Home Ed
installed. It did not come with the license certificate nor a disk. They do
still come normally from stores with those things correct?

Heidi,

Did you check the bottom of the laptop it may have a COA attached down there
that will have the key code and everything else. If there is not one you can
buy a new one from your local Circuit City, Best buy, office depot type
store. Good Luck

From some recent VAIO acquisitions, there should be a recovery
partition in the laptop's hard drive. However, that is not too
relevant here unless the COA label is still attached to the SONY.
Without it, the Windows XP is not certified. Either get the real
COA from the seller or buy your own copy of XP.

Thank you, that was exactly it - on the bottom of machine. So there is NO
disk with that type of license? I ask because we wanted to install XP Pro
instead...so the COA is a disposable license at this point if we do that?

Well a lot of the newer computers these days are coming with a recovery
partition on the Hard Drive. It may have had the CD come with it but when
buying off ebay a lot of the times the sellers don't include all that came
with the used computers. Yes, if you install windows XP Pro then the COA
will do you no good as it is a Sony registerred COA and you will not be able
to install it on any other machine. The reason I suggest going to your local
computer software retailer is because there are some scams on the internet
where they sell you bogus illegal COA's or other items, at the retail stores
you will get the proper software as well as a COA.

Good Luck

Thanks again. I've written to the seller asking for the CD and certificate.
But in the meantime since this computer will shortly go to college with a
student at Purdue we will order at student discount price the XP Pro and also
Office 2003 Pro to bring this up to where she will need it......thank
goodness for student prices on campus, she didn't have the money to really go
much further than the already $1500 it cost to get this laptop for new
software and OS. Guess she and I both have learned one more pit-fall ...of
.....e...com. It listed for over $1900 so we felt good, until we discovered
this little glitch.

1500??? If you don't mind me asking what brand and model is it? 1500 is
pretty steep you can get a great laptop brand new with warranty for 1400 or
less. Well I'm glad I was able to help you.
