Publishing Process Does Not Complete

FP2000. If I simply edit an existing page or create a new page and publish
my local copy (http) to server, no problems. If I in any way modify the
navigation structure, however, the publishing process does not complete.
Example of steps and problem:

1) Created new page by copying and then renaming an existing page,
2) Added new page to navigation structure so button appears in sidebar,
3) Edited an existing page adding internal hyperlink to new page.

Everything on local copy looks and works fine in preview mode. When
publishing to server (whether I publish changed pages only or overwrite all
pages), the process will not complete.

Of interest, the new page is there on the server and the live web, the
sidebar button for the new page is there, the page I added the internal
hyperlink to is there. Everything actually works except that all the text on
the navigation buttons is gone (though if you hold the cursor over a button,
the hover text will appear). The message I receive is to check to make sure
FP Server Extensions are installed. They were reinstalled on the server, but
it didn't help. If FP Server Extensions were not installed, however, I would
think I would have problems any time I try to publish even if I didn't modify
the navigation structure.

Though the live web is working (but the button text is missing), I cannot
open the server copy directly with FP. I receive a timeout error and it
won't even show me the folders/files in the folder/file list, so I cannot fix
anything this way (though I might be able to edit in file manager using
cpanel).

Any thoughts appreciated. Sorry for long message, but I wanted to provide
clarity.

Try Opening your online web in FP and after opening Nav View (check or change the page name there) try running a Tools Recalculate
hyperlinks

Thanks, but the server won't allow me to open the server copy with FP since
this problem arose. It keeps timing out and will not even display the list
of folders/files, so I can't check or change the page name in nav view.

Have you host run a repair on the FP SE
- also
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
