publishing problems

I push publish and it says "server error check client connection". Earlier it asked for FTP and directory path details. I didn't remember these so I got FTP but when I went to put them in FP98 came up with screen wanting Name and password. I didn't know these and tried a few I may have used. It has been a year or 2 since I last updated!
Can anyone help me out? I'm using 98SE

I should say that there was also a server error - error accessing files -authors see webmaster and webmaster see servers system log for details. Where is the system log? My frontpage 98 website is working and I am just trying to update it.
