Publishing Problem FP 2003 SP2

Al Kaufmann

I have a personal website and it worked fine for a long time, then for some
reason I was no longer able to publish to the website. Frontpage provides
the following info when I try to publish:

-------
Server Error:
Possible Causes:
1. The web server may not have Frontpage server extensions installed
2. The web server may be temporarily out of order
3. If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy setting may be
incorrect
4. An error has occured in the web server
If this server does not support Frontpage extensions, Frontpage may still be
able to publish to the server via FTP or Webdav, please select one of these
options and try again.
-------

First off Frontpage server extensions are installed, the web server is not
out of order and I am not connecting through a proxy server. As for the 4th
item, it is obvious that an error has occured somewhere but I don't know if
it is an error in the web server or with my Frontpage.

To try and fix the problem, I deleted the webspace and then created it again
with the Frontpage extentions installed (http://members.shaw.ca/al.kaufmann)
and always get the same results when I try to publish. I have created a new
webspace (http://members.shaw.ca/Kaufmann001) and Frontpage has no problem
publishing! I have contacted my Internet Service Provider and after making
me jump through a bunch of hoops they passed this problem up to more
knowledgeable people. They moved the webspace to a different server and
again I got the same result. They are looking at it again now.

This problem has no been ongoing for several weeks so if anyone here has
some idea of how to fix this problem I would really appreciate hearing it.

Thanks
Al

Go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and download FP Cleaner.
Download links are at the bottom of the page.
Run the functions that clear:
The FrontPage Temporary files.
The Cache (*.web) files.

See if it helps.

Frontpage Cleaner deleted 2 temporary files and 47 cache files but when I
tried to publish I got the same result. Thanks for trying.

There is no such entry in My Network Places. No hidden or system files
there either. I think this may be a problem that the ISP needs to correct.

Not you ISP, your host.

Have your host reset / restore the FrontPage extensions.
Or do it yourself if you have a web masters CPanel.

My ISP is also my host. I don't have access to a control panel I can only
enable or disable the Frontpage extensions or delete and create the
webspace. It is obvious to me that when I delete this webspace that
somethings are not really deleted. If I create a new webspace with a
different name, there is no problem, same name, same problem.

Sorry to bring this problem up again but it still has not been resolved and
by following the suggestions of my ISP/Host it is a Frontpage problem.

Just to restate the problem I could not use HTTP to publish my website. I
can use FTP to publish but not HTTP. I publish quite a few other websites
with this same host and all of them publish fine using HTTP.

After a long period of trial and error they suggested I try publishing the
website from a different machine. I installed Frontpage 2003 on that
machine, then I published my website to a removable drive, I plugged that
drive into the other machine, started up Frontpage and it published fine
using HTTP. Just to make sure I went back to my machine and also tried to
publish from that removable drive and I immediately got the old error
message... Frontpage extensions not installed ... server may by out to lunch
temporarily.. etc.

Now I am trying the figure out what is different between the two machines. I
did not activate Frontpage on my spare machine and I did not get any updates
(if there are any). I don't think these two things would be the cause of
this problem. I did do a clean install of my entire system and I had this
problem before that and after. I did restore the websites from a backup
file so maybe I also restored the problem.

There must be some setting in Frontpage that is set for this and only this
website that prevents it from being published. If anyone know what is going
on here please let me know.

P.S. I'm almost ready to start learning windows expressions.

Probably publishing straight from the removeable drive that is causing the
problem.

I'd publish from the removeable drive to your main system HDD, then publish
by HTTP to the server.

See if that resolves the issue.

I just put in on the removable drive to take it to the other system, it
published there from the removeable drive. My main system always uses the
fixed hard drives.

There has to be something that Frontpage defaults to for that secific
webspace. I publish to webspace1, problems, change it to publish to
webspace2, it works. Use another machine and I can publish to webspace1.

Are you sure the username and password OK on the machine that won't publish?

I got the same errors and chased it for a week or two with my ISP, getting
the same error messages as you.

Never got a prompt to check username or password - only that 'FrontPage
extentions not installed', etc.

Come to find out, there was a difference in the username that I had missed.

It never gets to the enter username and password stage, just that error
message. I have checked that webspace name which is the same as the
username very carefully and even tried upper case for the first letter.

I installed a preview version of Expression Web Designer (the future
Frontpage replace I suppose), opened the website, told it to publish to my
webspace (it has the exact same interface for publishing) and it published
just fine. I went back to Frontpage and tried it again and again it failed
to publish. I am 99.9% sure it is a Frontpage bug.
