Publishing FrontPage Web

J

Justin

Have a desktop (AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2200+ 1.8 GHz)and
Twinhead notebook (GenuineIntel Family 6 Model 8 997)on a
Linksys wireless network.

Upgraded to FP 2002 a couple of months ago on the desktop
and have been updating and publishing websites with no
extraordinary challenges. Last night tried to publish
changes to one of my sites. When I click the Publish icon
on Toolbar nothing happens, when I Select Publish Web from
the File Menu hour glass appears. The lights on DSL modem
are all flashing rapidly but in neither case to I get the
user name / password dialog. Tried to publish another
Website to a different server with same results. I then
copied the Web files from first Website to my notebook and
was able to publish the Web normally

Ran FrontPage Detect and Repair on the desktop but it did
not solve anything.

Next searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and found
Articl 324843 How to Troubleshoot Publishing Problems in
FrontPage. Pinged the server successfully from Desktop as
described in Test 1. Visited the Server as specified in
Step 2. Tried to open the Web in FrontPage, step 3, and
message box saying Connecting to Web Server comes up but
that is as far as it goes. Checked the Proxy Settings on
both computers and they are the same, nothing is checked
on the LAN Settings on either computer. Do not know what
else to check.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you running any Firewall Software?

Also try finding and deleting any *.web files

Thanks Stefan,

Have been running Norton Personal Firewall since before I
upgraded to FP 2002 with no challenges (only had to
disable once to activate FP online) but did disable at one
point while troubleshooting current issue with no positive
effect.

Just deleted all *.web files from system, rebooted
computer, disabled firewall and other programs running and
tried publishing site again: same result

Try testing your server by using File Open Web and enter your server URL
(or browse to the page in IE and use Edit w/ FP)

Proxy, firewall, antivirus settings all the same and have
not changed since time when FrontPage was working and
publishing properly. In addition I just uninstalled FP
and reinstalled FP and then the service packs and security
update. Tried to publish 4 different websites; one
published normally, the other three still would not publish

Has the host done any changes, since you can publish to one of the 4, which
kind of indicate that it is a server/connection issue.

Also whenever you uninstall FP, and then reinstall, your live site is now
out of sync with your local copies, and you will need to do a full publish
either to the server or from the server back to your PC, before you can use
the Change Page Only option.

No change at host and I have published to the other three
websites and two other sites since from notebook normally.
Notebook is networked to desktop using same modem,
internet connection etc. Seems to me challenge is with
desktop. Already tried the obvious: checked for viruses,
scanned and defragged disk, shut memory resident programs,
even uninstalled some programs and then uninstalled and
reinstalled FP and of course the FP updates
