PSU help!!!

OK, I realise my system crashes because my PSU is not good enough. I am
currently
running a QTEC 550W, which I now know is rubbish. I need something that
will support three DVD drives, three HDD, eight system fans and a power
hungry Radeon 9800Pro graphics card. Currently when the 9800 pro runs at
full speed it causes the pc to switch off as the power is not great enough.
I have seen 600W psu's, but have been told that the overall W is not true to
the power output.
All help appreciated.

Eight system fans? Are you including the CPU and VGA and PSU fans or is that
case fans? Are you running serious overclocking and the DVD constantly?
I have an Athlon 64, DVD ROM and DVD burner, three HDD's , the 9800 Pro
256mb and only ONE 120mm fan in the back of the case. My power supply is a
Coolmax 400w (its probably actualy more like 350wbecause its a bit of a
cheapy PSU) with 120mm fan.
I dont know about the QTEC PSU's but a cheap PSU will not always handle the
wattage they claim.

Are you sure its the 9800 not getting enough power and not thats its
overclocked or geting too hot?
Try running the 9800 power lead on a PS lead with less or no other
components on it. Its not just the overall wattage that matters, but the
power each power cable is able to deliver stable current and voltage.

Check out the Allied PSU's at NewEgg. Awsome reviews and very affordable.
Never understood people who pay big $$ for PSU's. My systems have always
performed well with middle of the road stuff. I got 2 DVD's, 2 HDD's, 6 case
fans, and the 9800 Pro.

Try the Tagan TG480-U01 power supply. Hard to get hold off but worth
the effort. Whisper quiet (21d+) and more leads than you can wave a
dog at. Includes leads for latest specs.

Check out Pc Power & Cooling. Their psu are alittle pricey compared to
others but they are rock solid. I'm using the 510 TurboCool Deluxe with 5
10000 rpm scsi drives, 4 optical drives, 9800Pro, 1.5Gb memory & P42.8c.

Since the OP is posting from the UK, this link to the Scan Computers Today
Only webpage will be more relevant if that product is settled on:
http://www.scan.co.uk/todayonly/ - its a few quid off at the moment. I can't
comment on that unit as I've never had one but in this day and age of so
called whisper quiet dual (or even triple) fan psus which actually sound
quite noisey, 21 dB (and a single fan) is quiet refreshing. I've just bought
an extremely quiet (19dB) Nexus NX-3500 350 Watt PSU for my Pentium III
machine but they don't put out units powerful enough for the OPs needs.
