Provide more complete detail of just what you did.
You are obviously telling us only a small part of this story.

Hi,

I had to wipe my hard drive and saved my outlook files on a CDROM in
two
.pst files -- one personal and the other archive. How can
I access them? When I try to open either, I am asked which program to
use and I tried Outlook, Word, Notes, and nothing seems to
work. Any help is appreciated.

Ok
1. The it copied my pst file to a DVD.
2. I copied the pst file to my HD removed the read only att.
3. Try to open the file in outlook. Out look came with a message saying i
first need to define the att. of my "information service".
4. So i went to my post map open it but could not find the tab which is for
services.
5. Start talking with people on the newsgroup how to start
6. I used scanpst to find out if there where problems and scanpst came up
with some errors in fase 7 and was not able to continue.

Hopefully this gives you the total picture.

Was Outlook closed when you did this? Did you use Windows XP's drag-to-disk
to burn the PST to the DVD?
2. I copied the pst file to my HD removed the read only att.

Control Panel's Mail applet should let you do this.

What's a "post map"?
6. I used scanpst to find out if there where problems and scanpst

Sounds like an unrecoverably corrupted PST. The most common cause of this
is something not correct in the copy or burn process (like an open PST or
burning software that isn't working correctly).

So scanpst came up with errors it could not fix?
There's your answer. You have a corrupt PST file.

Thanks very much. I opened the file and copied the subfolders in my prsonal

open even when I am logged in as administrator. In any case, many thanks.

I am having similar problems trying to transfer e-mails received remotely on
my laptop (running XP Home and Outlook 2003) to my desktop (running XP Pro
and Outlook 2002). I am now (after hours of searching Microsofts website and
spending over 3 hours with a Toshiba tech suprevisor who couldn't help me)
aware of the file incompatibility between the two version of Outlook. So I
created on the laptop a pst file using the 97-2002 file type. Then I moved
all the e-mails on the laptop from the 2003 pst file folders to the 97-2002
pst file folders within Outlook. Next, I copied this pst folder to a CD. No
where was the opportunity presented to change the attributes on this file
beefore or during the copying process. Next I inserted the CD into the
desktop and copied that file onto the HD in the Documents and Settings/my
name/Application Data/Micrrosoft/Outlook folder. This file now appears in
the Windows Explorer finder. Now, when I click on the new file on the HD,
the read only attribute is NOT checked, and there is no "archive" attribute
as an option, only "hidden" which is also not checked. When I ckick on this
file on the CD, the "read only" attribute is checked, but when I remove the
check and click "Apply" or "OK" ("hidden" is also an alternative on this one,
but is unchecked), I get an error message saying that access is denied. When
I then open Outlook 2002 on the desktop and try to import the 97-2002 pst
file from the HD location, I get a message saying that the file is
incompatible. When I try to directly open the 97-2002 pst file from the HD
(with Outlook closed), all I get is a blank Untititle Contacts form. When I
close it, the screen goes back to the Windows explorer showing the file
listed. The file properties show 27.1MB of data so I know there is more
stuff in that file than one blank Contacts form.

I am absolutely and totally frustrated with this entire situation. I never
heard about any incompatibliy between the two programs at all prior to
purchasing the new laptop, and neither did the Toshibia surpervisor. What
am I doing wrong, or what can I try next? Even if there is an error on my
part, there has GOT to be a better way to transfer e-mails between versions
that this. My guess is that the problem lies in moving the 2003 pst files
into the 97-2002 pst folder and that there is really no "conversion"
occurring in that process. Is there another way to copy or otherwise
transfer the e-mails so that a true conversion occurs? If so, please give me
step-by-step instructions. Sorry for the long e-mail, but I wanted to give
enough details so that a higer intelligent being could pinpoint the exact
problem and help me out. Thanks. LRV

desktop (running XP Pro and Outlook 2002). I am now (after hours of
searching Microsofts website and spending over 3 hours with a Toshiba
tech suprevisor who couldn't help me) aware of the file
incompatibility between the two version of Outlook.

Microsoft's site contains many, many references to this, including this one:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=830336 . A simple search string of "2002
PST" found it easily.
So I created on
the laptop a pst file using the 97-2002 file type. Then I moved all
the e-mails on the laptop from the 2003 pst file folders to the
97-2002 pst file folders within Outlook. Next, I copied this pst
folder to a CD.

I hope Outlook was closed when you did this.
No where was the opportunity presented to change the
attributes on this file beefore or during the copying process.

Of course not, but the read-only attribute gets applied because CDs are
inherently read-only devices.
Next I inserted the CD into the desktop and copied that file onto the HD
in the Documents and Settings/my name/Application
Data/Micrrosoft/Outlook folder.

I hope you didn't overwrite any PST of the same name. This can cause
trouble. The folder to which you copy the PST is largely irrelevant,
provided you have access to the folder.
This file now appears in the
Windows Explorer finder. Now, when I click on the new file on the
HD, the read only attribute is NOT checked, and there is no "archive"
attribute as an option, only "hidden" which is also not checked.
When I ckick on this file on the CD, the "read only" attribute is
checked, but when I remove the check and click "Apply" or "OK"

get an error message saying that access is denied.

You can't write to a CD after closing the session and CDs can't hold
writable files anyway.
When I then open
Outlook 2002 on the desktop and try to import the 97-2002 pst file
from the HD location, I get a message saying that the file is
incompatible.

Don't import a PST. Ever. Open it in Outlook with File>Open>Outlook Data
File.
When I try to directly open the 97-2002 pst file from
the HD (with Outlook closed), all I get is a blank Untititle Contacts
form.

Naturally. You have to open it in Outlook not with Explorer. Explorer
doesn't know what to do with it.
When I close it, the screen goes back to the Windows explorer
showing the file listed. The file properties show 27.1MB of data so
I know there is more stuff in that file than one blank Contacts form.
What am I doing wrong, or what can I try next?

Try opening it in Outlook.
Even
if there is an error on my part, there has GOT to be a better way to
transfer e-mails between versions that this. My guess is that the
problem lies in moving the 2003 pst files into the 97-2002 pst
folder and that there is really no "conversion" occurring in that
process.

I've done it many times. Works like a champ EVERY time.
If so, please give me step-by-step instructions.

In the source Outlook, click File>New>Outlook Data File>Outlook 97-2002
Personal Folders File (.pst). Click OK. Browse to the folder where you
want it (or accept the default), give it a name (or accept the default) and
click OK. Give it a display name (or accept the default of "Personal
Folders") and click OK. You'll now have a second PST showing in the Folder
List. Right-click each of the folders in your original folder list and drag
it to the new PST. Release the button and choose Copy. When you've copied
them all, right-click the new PST and choose Close. Close Outlook. If
needed make sure OUTLOOK.EXE does not exist as a process in the Processes
list in Task Manager. Copy the PST to the other computer by whatever means
you have. If this is a CD, that's fine. Be aware there is anecdotal
evidence that some burning apps do not handle PSTs well. Nero may be one of
them. I've never had trouble with Roxio Easy CD Creator or the built-in
Windows XP burning capability (which, in truth, is Roxio).

Once burned, on the destination PC, copy the PST from the CD to any file on
the hard drive (Windows Explorer), but do NOT overwrite any existing PST of
the same name. Remove the read-only attribute in the file's properties and
then start Outlook. Click File>Open>Outlook Data File, browse to the PST,
select it, and click OK. That's it. You can either use it as-is, copy the
data to the other PST, or make it your delivery location at the bottom left
of Tools>E-mail Accounts>Next.
