pst file not recognized

Had to downgrade from Vista Ultimate to Vista Home Premium (don't ask me, ask
Sony.) Backed up my files with Microsoft OneCare. Now, I can't get Outlook
to import the backed-up pst file. It tells me that it is NOT a pst.
Properties says that it is PST. Looks like a PST. NOT set to "read only."
I'm stuck. Please help me out of this hole. Thank you.

Firstly, do NOT use the import function to import native Outlook data.
Why?

Importing an entire PST may well corrupt your profile and may create a ghost
PST that you can't close. Importing PST's will lose:
1. Custom Forms
2. Custom Views
3. Connections between contacts and activities
4. Received dates on mail
5. Birthdays and anniversaries in calendar
6. Journal connections
7. Distribution Lists

Opening a PST file will preserve all of these. That is why we do not advise
people to import a native file into Outlook.

Secondly, where is this pst file residing? If on a CD/DVD then you can't do
use it from there. You need to copy it to your HDD, and remove any read-only
attribute.
then you have two choices - you can either open it in Outlook
(File-Open-Outlook data File) and copy the data to the new pst file, or,
having opened it, set it as the default delivery location. (Useful if you
have lots of data...)

The file is on the desktop. It is not read only. File--open still returns
that "this is not a personal folders file." Trying the Inbox Repair Tool, I
get "Fatal Error: 80040818"

I do appreciate your assistance. What next?

Sounds as though you have a corrupted pst file. Do you have a backed-up copy
somewhere else?
If not, you might like to have a look here:

The original backup is still on the Live OneCare backup CD. I have tried
running the restore again, but with the same results. I wonder if OneCare
would have a solution?

Can you extract individual files from this backup CD? Was Outlook closed
when you made the backup?

Yes and yes. I am working from an individually extracted file. I tried the
datacumen link and the demo version crashed while trying to fix the file.
I'll see if maybe OneCare support has an answer. Thank you.
