PS/2 keyboard & mouse no longer work

There is a topic with the same issue as me:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...ouse+ps2+"don't+work"&rnum=1#6e4664e45a38fda6

After pluging my USB cable (for digital camera) as usual, there were
some pc speaker beeps (like at boot time) then the computer froze.
Upon reboot, there was a series of briek beeps, and neither keyboard
nor mouse worked, even during POST (meaning I can't access the BIOS).
However, windows boots normally.
I've plugged keyboard and mouse in my laptop (usb only) and they work
perfectly.

Keyboard & mouse are USB plugged in the PS/2 ports with adapters. I've
tried plugging them directly in the usb ports under windows, but it
says intallation has failed, and won't work.

I've tried to plug keyboard and mouse separately at boot time, no
success. Inverted plugs (keybord in mouse PS/2 and vice-versa).
However, when the keyboard isn't plugged, I don't hear the
"pathological" beeps, only the normal successful POST beep.

I haven't tried other keyboards or mice as I don't have any under hand.

I will try native PS/2 keyboard and mouse, as well as a serial mouse.

My guess is that somehow the PS/2 ports have a problem on the mobo. Are
there (bootable?) PCI PS/2 cards ?

Thanks for any help (I don't feel like buying a new mobo/CPU/RAM) !

PS: I don't think the hardware details are relevant in that case.
(no my computer actually so I don't have a great deal of detail...
anyways: Athlon @ 1300 MHz, 256 MB SDRAM @ 133, VIA chipset.

Hi -- Sorry I don't have the answer for you. But be careful -- some
of the "experts" in this group give wrong advice.

Just for fun, lets see if we can seperate windows weirdness from
hardware failure. We know your peripherals are fine, as they worked in
your laptop. (I'd ask you do go into the device manager, but you can't
type or move the mouse)

A failure of the Ps2 ports doesn't explain why the peripherals don't
work in USB mode. Unless you have some other issue. Or multiple
simultaneous failures.

The one other issue is RAM, Download a copy of memtest86+, boot your
machine with it. Let it run for at least one complete cycle (though in
my expierence, if a stick of ram is bad, you usually find out in the
first 5 minutes)

If there is no RAM issue, then both ps2 and USB ports are hosed. Or
it's a windows issue. Heres how to find out, download any dos boot disk
frow www.bootdisk.com. Boot with it, you'll be taken to a commad
prompt. Try to type. If you can, it's a windows issue.

If not, these are your options: get a usb card that does't need drivers
(if it does need drivers, you're stuck, cuz you can't type)

Trying native ps2 peripherals may help.

If nothing works, it may be time for a new motherboard. Sorry.

Thanks paulmdp,

I happen to have a usb 2.0 pci card at home, I'll try it. Somehow I
hadn't thought about this option !
Can I try the boot options (memtest86+ and dos) from a CD-ROM (the
computer is set to boot on CD-ROM before the HDD) ?

Note that with your mouse and keyboard, if they weren't designed to be used
in USB mode, adapters won't magically make them work (just because the plug
fits, doesn't mean that a device will work in that given connection method).

Microsoft has released keyboards that are only PS/2, and so have others.
The principle also applies to mice as well.

The latest version of Memtest+ is available at http://www.memtest.org

You should download the precompiled Bootable ISO - i.e.
http://www.memtest.org/download/1.65/memtest86+-1.65.iso.zip

Unzip it, burn the iso as an image, and then you should be able to boot up
from it. No user input is required, so basically just watch the screen.

Yup. It's available as an ISO image. That's the perferred method.

The usb card worked fine. Auto-installed by win xp. Mouse and keyboard
work fine now.
However, uthey won't work before windows loads... so I can't access the
bios anymore. Not a big deal for now.
I've tried a native PS/2 keyboard. No beeps, but it doesn't work
either.
I've tried burning the memtest86+ iso, but it failed ! It was late so
I'll try again tonight.

If you really DO have bad memory, that could be a symptom. May want to
try with another machine.
