My 72 year old friend has a problem getting onto the Internet. I am her
helper and found that the cause was a tick in the "Use a Proxy server" box.
I removed the tick and sure enough she was able to browse the Internet and
gather her emails. However. After I had gone home she phoned me to say that
as soon as she tried to browse the web again later, she got an error report
the same as before. On my return I found the tick in the "Use a proxy
server" box had re-appeared. this has recurred repeatedly since then and she
is ready to give up.
Can anybody advise me how to overcome this problem.

Thanks in anticipation of any help given.

Regards.... Stuart.

She's undoubtedly got lots of spyware, browser hijackers, and that sort
of malware. You're probably going to have to help her with this because
it involves downloading, installing, and running removal tools: remove
spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from www.security.kolla.de and
Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs
before running them. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal
tools in Safe Mode. Be sure she has a current (post-2002 version using
updated definitions) antivirus installed, also.

Thank you. I will give your ideas a try. She already has EZ antivirus
Updated daily when she can connect. I think I put AdAware on her computer
some time ago and am sure I did a system scan with the update quite
recently. As I am the computer helper to quite a few friends I may be
mistaken as I am frequently called in to trouble shoot their problems. I
will let you know the result.

Could also be a browser hijack. Try HiJackThis(????) software to remove
this type of problem.

Also, make sure that the spyware removal tools are using their latest
software detection updates.
