Protecting a Download Page

I want to set up a protected "area" on my website for people to download
eBooks after payment.

I know how to set up a password protected subsite.
I can have PayPal "return" customers to a mysite webpage page that gives
them the required User Name & Password together with a link into the subsite.

My questions:

Is this the best way to go about this?
If so, am I missing some better way to implement this method?

I do not (currently) know how to write scripts or do other such "high-level"
things although I can usually get other people's scripts to work.

TIA,

I don't think there is anyway to securely hide the location of the file to be downloaded without
using a server-side script, because even with a password protected area, folks can still share the
login info or the in the case of using the PayPal return link, you are providing the user with a
page that they can share with others..

If the eBook is small enough, you could always wait for payment, then email the user the file or
send a link for the download, giving them 24 hours and then moving the file.

With a server-side script you can hide the location of the file or test for a specific value from
the return PayPal link.
